How to Care for Your Print
Follow these steps to keep your print looking gallery fresh for decades.
Handling
Allow rolled prints to relax flat for 30 to 60 minutes. Handle by the edges with clean, dry hands and avoid touching the printed surface.
Placement
Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources and high humidity areas. North-facing walls receive less UV. Use LED or incandescent lighting instead of fluorescent.
Framing
Use acid-free mats and UV protective glass or acrylic for maximum longevity. Leave a small gap between print and glazing for airflow.
Cleaning
Dust framed glass with a soft cloth. Spray the cloth, not the glass. For unframed prints, use a dry microfibre cloth and never apply liquids to the surface.
Climate
Keep temperature at 18–24 °C and humidity at 40–60%. Avoid attics, basements and garages where conditions swing widely.
Storage
Store flat in acid-free folders, interleaved with tissue paper, in a cool dark place. Never fold. Check stored prints annually.
⚠️ Avoid
- Prolonged direct sunlight or fluorescent lighting.
- Bathrooms, kitchens and areas above heat sources.
- Tape, adhesives or liquids applied directly to the print.
- Rolling with the image facing inward as this can crack the ink layer.
- Extreme or rapid temperature and humidity changes.
📊 Expected Lifespan
- 100+ years when framed with UV protective glazing and indirect light.
- 50–75 years when framed with standard glass and indirect light.
- 25–50 years when stored correctly in darkness.
This Kawase Hasui Red Sunset art print captures a pivotal moment in Japanese woodblock history. Produced in 1937, this work reflects the Shin-hanga movement’s commitment to light, atmosphere, and traditional technique while acknowledging the shifting political climate of the era. The composition features a bold line of cavalry soldiers marching across the horizon, their forms rendered in deep, solid black silhouettes that contrast sharply against the lower atmospheric glow.
The Historical Significance of Kawase Hasui Red Sunset
The Kawase Hasui Red Sunset, often titled ‘Sunsetting at the Front,’ serves as a somber yet visually striking example of late-period Shin-hanga. Unlike the artist’s earlier peaceful temple scenes, this 1930s Japanese landscape incorporates military imagery, yet retains the delicate color gradations for which Hasui is famous. The sky transitions from a saturated crimson at the earth’s edge to a cool, smoky gray above, utilizing the ‘bokashi’ technique of hand-applied ink gradients to create a sense of vast, open space. This vintage ukiyo-e poster brings a sense of historical weight and graphic intensity to any space.
Visual Composition and Color Theory
In the Kawase Hasui Red Sunset, the use of negative space is handled with curator-level precision. The lower third of the frame is anchored by the dark silhouettes of horses and riders, with spears and rifles breaking the horizontal plane to add rhythmic verticality. The thorny brush in the foreground adds a layer of texture, grounding the silhouetted figures within a physical environment. This Shin-hanga woodblock print is not merely a depiction of figures but an exercise in tonal balance. The vibrant red serves as a light source that seems to radiate from behind the cavalry, suggesting a world in transition.
