Tomioka Guyu made his first appearance during the time when Tanjiro was carrying Nezuko on his back and taking her to treatment, they come across Giyu who holds a sword against the demon with the intention to kill her. Giyu is the current Water Hashira and one of the strongest swordsmen in the Hashira squad, he is a man of very less words and is often picked on by his comrades. You see him in his full potential when he saves Tanjiro and slices down the upper moon Rui with his “Eleventh Form: Dead Calm”, this loner doesn’t like to waste his words and breath on the demons.
During the final battles where the Hashira’s go all out vs Muzan and his Upper Moons, you can see Giyu activating his demon slayer mark and going all out with Tanjiro to defeat a strong Akaza! He is as dangerous as a demon when he is serious, the Water Hashira is the reason Tanjiro and Nezuko survived the Hashiras and got a place in the Demon Slayer Corps. He has lost his friends Sabito to demons and that’s the reason he wants to protect Tanjiro, as his nature reminds him of his friend Sabito. Towards the end Giyu is one of the people who survive the battle with Muzan.
Personality and Appearance
Giyu is a very shy and timid person who prefers to stay alone, he has a pale skin and has jet black shoulder length hair. He ties his long hair in a bony tail, his sharp eyes with blue pupils make him look like a serious person which he is. Giyu wears a Unique Haori which is a tribute to his late friends Sabito, it is half green and yellow checkered (Sabito’s Haori) and the other half is maroon color which belonged to his late sister Tsutako Tomioka.
He is someone who is always serious during the work and he would finish the demons in one shot unlike the other demon slayers like Tanjiro who show mercy at times. Most of the Hashiras dislike his personality as he seems like a very rude person but all he wants is to stay away and speak less words. He didn’t even share his name with Akaza as he thought there’s no need to share anything with a demon, the only hashira who likes to poke at him is Shinobu the Insect Hashira.
Abilities
Giyu is one of the smartest Demon Slayers in the series, he is a very skillfull swordsman where he could slice down many medium level demons during the Infinite Castle Arc. His water breathing techniques are very powerful, and you can see the level when he decapitated Rui with one slash, whereas Tanjiro almost dies defeating him. Giyu also managed to defeat the Father Spider Demon in his full transformed stated, something which the demon slayers were struggling to achieve.
Akaza, was amazed by the level of this Water Hashira and said that he had never come across a water user as strong as Tomioka Giyu! Just like Rengoku, Akaza proposed to Giyu and asked him to become a demon and to not waste his talents living a mortal life. During the fight with Akaza, Giyu awakened his demon slayer mark which looked like a water sign and this increased his speed, attacks and stamina massively.
Battle Techniques
Tomioka Giyu is the most skilled water breathing user it the history of the Hashiras, he surpassed his teacher Sakonji Urokodaki (Former Water Hashira) who taught him the water breathing technique. Giyu can perform 11 forms of water breathing techniques, where the eleventh form is the deadliest one, he named it as the “Dead Calm”. You can see him display when he ends Rui the spider demon in one slash, you can imagine how powerful giyu is with this level of technique.
He took this one step above and created “Dead Calm: Tidal Waves”, where he displays a calm environment and then suddenly appears behind the enemy attacking him with sharp water slashes similar to swords. These towering waves slam down the opponent and gives giyu the time to finish the move.
He is also an amazing swordsman who battled akaza and kept pushing him in a corner, to this akaza said that he had never seen someone so talented with a sword and wanted to keep fighting Giyu for eternity. Something which is impressive about Giyu is that his will is very strong and during the battle with the Demon King Muzan he lost an arm, but he still kept going with the same rage and power wanting to end the fight.

Facts
- Giyu is one of the Four Hashiras that use a normal Nichirin Katana. The other 3 are Kyojuro Rengoku, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Muichiro Tokito.
- His first name “Giyu” means Justice!
- Giyu’s favorite food is simmered salmon with daikon. Once when he was served with this dish, he was seen smiling from ear to ear.
- Giyu’s Haori was almost torn to pieces after the final battle against Muzan, but Nezuko restores by her amazing sewing abilities
- Tomioka Giyu becomes good friends with Tengen and his family after the final battle. When Tengen’s child was born, he was the only one allowed to hold the baby.
