The Complete Poster Size Guide (Inches & Centimeters)

Choosing a poster size is really two decisions: what fits the wall, and what fits a frame you can actually buy. This guide covers both — every standard US and international size, the rooms each one suits, and the measurements interior designers use before they ever pick the art.

Standard US poster sizes

US print sizes follow photographic and framing conventions rather than a single system, which is why the jumps feel irregular. These seven cover almost every framed poster sold in North America:

A-series (international) sizes

The ISO A-series halves each sheet to make the next size down, so every A-size shares the same 1:1.414 proportions. A2 (16.5×23.4 in / 42×59.4 cm) and A1 (23.4×33.1 in / 59.4×84.1 cm) are the poster staples. The practical rule: match the frame system you already own — US frames won't fit A-sizes cleanly and vice versa, and a mismatched mat gap always shows.

Room math: the two-thirds and 57-inch rules

Two measurements solve most sizing questions. First, art over furniture should span 60–75% of the furniture's width — the "two-thirds rule". Second, the center of the artwork should sit 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor, the gallery-standard eye level covered in depth in our art placement height guide. Measure the wall, apply both, and the right size usually reveals itself before taste even enters the conversation.

Portrait, landscape or square?

Match the artwork's orientation to the wall's shape, not the furniture's. Tall, narrow wall segments (between windows, beside doors) want portrait prints; long walls above sofas and headboards want landscape or a horizontal row of portraits.
