Product description

This Eisenstaedt Goebbels print reproduces one of the most studied photographs in the history of photojournalism: Alfred Eisenstaedt’s 1933 portrait of Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda minister, taken in the garden of the Carlton Hotel during a League of Nations conference in Geneva. Goebbels had been cordial until he learned that Eisenstaedt — a German-born Jewish photographer for what would become LIFE — was Jewish; the glare that followed is why the picture is remembered as the ‘eyes of hate’.

It is a difficult, unflattering image by design, and that is its value: a piece of documentary history rather than decoration, often collected alongside other landmark portrait photography and black and white photography prints. Eisenstaedt himself recalled holding his nerve — ‘when I have a camera in my hand, I know no fear’ — and the resulting frame is taught as an example of how a single portrait can record a moment of menace. Browse more reportage on the photography prints hub, or see Eisenstaedt’s wider photography poster collection.

Offered as a fine-art reproduction in multiple sizes; stock and finish are described on the print quality and materials page.

Is This print?

No. It is a modern fine-art reproduction of Eisenstaedt’s photograph, not an original, vintage or signed gelatin-silver print.

Why would someone hang a portrait of Goebbels?

It is generally collected as historical photojournalism — a record of the Third Reich seen through a Jewish photographer’s lens — rather than as a flattering subject. The image is studied in photography and history alike.

Is it black and white?

Yes. The reproduction preserves the stark monochrome of the original gelatin-silver photograph.

It earns its spot in a wall of portrait photography prints, with fine art photography prints making an easy companion.
