No other member of its genus exists beyond the Smew, a small merganser whose winter plumage is so distinctly pale it is often called the White Nun. This print reproduces John James Audubon’s 1835 plate, capturing the male in mid-dive with its sharp white and black feathers outstretched, while the chestnut-headed female floats on the churning water below.
