Even though they are the largest cats in the Americas, jaguars are actually the only members of the Panthera genus that do not roar like lions or tigers. This print captures a female Felis onca in a protective, snarling stance against a backdrop of a decayed hollow tree.

About John James Audubon

John James Audubon’s Birds of America was published between 1827 and 1838, with life-size engraved plates coloured by hand. Audubon showed birds in dramatic, lifelike poses among the plants of their habitat. Natural history illustration combined careful observation with artistry long before photography. John James Audubon (1785–1851) set out to paint every bird species of North America.
