About John James Audubon

Audubon showed birds in dramatic, lifelike poses among the plants of their habitat. Audubon plates are in the public domain and remain among the most loved natural history art. Natural history illustration combined careful observation with artistry long before photography. His Birds of America was published between 1827 and 1838, with life-size engraved plates coloured by hand.
