The vibrant crimson plumage of the adult Scarlet Ibis is a direct result of its diet, which is rich in carotenoids found in crustaceans. In this meticulous scientific composition, the mature bird with its intense red feathers dominates the left side, curving its long neck toward a white juvenile ibis perched on a mossy rock.

About John James Audubon

John James Audubon’s Birds of America was published between 1827 and 1838, with life-size engraved plates coloured by hand. Audubon showed birds in dramatic, lifelike poses among the plants of their habitat. Natural history bird illustrations were made to record species accurately, often life-size.
