About Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann (1934–2022) was an American photographer famous for surreal photomontages. Uelsmann built his dreamlike images in the darkroom by combining several negatives, long before digital editing. Many photographers still choose black and white to emphasise light, shape and mood over colour. The original dates from 1995. Black and white photography removes colour so shape, light and emotion lead. Without colour, a photograph relies on contrast, texture and composition, which is why black and white feels timeless.
