The American Goldfinch is the only finch that undergoes a complete molt twice a year, resulting in the brilliant yellow plumage seen in this print. Audubon captures a male and female pair amidst the jagged leaves and soft purple blooms of a wild thistle plant. The composition is balanced yet dynamic, with the birds angled toward the seed heads, rendered in a delicate naturalist style against a clean, off-white background.
