About Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was the Norwegian painter behind The Scream, one of the most recognised images in art. He was a pioneer of Expressionism and also made many woodcuts and lithographs. Expressionist artists used bold colour and distorted forms to convey feeling rather than appearance. The original image dates from 1895. Expressionism, which flourished in early 20th-century Germany and Austria, puts emotion before realism.
