About Egon Schiele

Schiele’s angular, nervous line and twisted poses made his figures raw and psychologically intense. He died at 28 in the 1918 influenza pandemic, leaving a remarkably large body of drawings and paintings. Groups such as Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter shaped Expressionism before the First World War. The original image dates from 1913. Expressionism, which flourished in early 20th-century Germany and Austria, puts emotion before realism.
