Product description
This vintage French dance photography print reproduces an open-air ball photographed in the Charente-Maritime region of France in 1959 by Janine Niépce — one of France’s first women photojournalists and, fittingly, a distant relative of photography pioneer Nicéphore Niépce. Working at the Rapho agency alongside Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis, Niépce belonged to the French humanist movement, which found its poetry in ordinary life: village dances, markets, lovers, children at play.
That warmth is the appeal here — a black-and-white scene of rural celebration that feels nostalgic without being staged. It brings an easy, lived-in charm to kitchens, dining rooms and hallways, and sits beautifully with bistro and farmhouse interiors. As candid documentary work it shares a shelf with street photography prints and the wider black and white photography catalogue. If you like Niépce’s eye for French daily life, her Paris concierge and cat, 1957 makes a lovely companion piece, and there is more to explore on the photography prints hub.
Each is a fine-art reproduction offered in several sizes; paper and finish are detailed on the print quality and materials page.
Who took this photograph?
Janine Niépce (1921–2007), a pioneering French photojournalist associated with the Rapho agency and the post-war humanist school of photography.
Colour or black and white?
Black and white — a gelatin-silver image, reproduced in soft monochrome with no added colour.
Is it an original vintage print?
No, it is a fine-art reproduction of the 1959 photograph, made for display rather than as a collectible vintage print.
The subject sits squarely within fine art photography prints, close in spirit to photography prints.
