About Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was an American painter associated with Abstract Expressionism and Colour Field painting. Rothko’s soft-edged rectangles of colour were meant to create an emotional, almost meditative experience. Early abstract pioneers included Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Hilma af Klint. The original dates from 1969. Modernist artists rejected strict realism in favour of new ways of seeing colour, form and space.
